Lonnie W. Motosicky, 51, of Lower Burrell, passed away on Sunday morning, July 12th, while in the company of family members, at Allegheny Valley Hospital. Lonnie was born in Natrona Heights on March 26, 1964. He was the son of Muriel J. (Hollier) Motosicky, of Lower Burrell and the late John Motosicky. He had worked as a laborer and a supervisor for PPG Industries in Creighton for 25 years. Lonnie was a member of the Armstrong Lodge No 239 F & AM in Freeport. He enjoyed hunting, fishing and the outdoors. Lonnie loved spending time with his brothers and father at their family camp in Marienville. He was a member of Puckety Presbyterian Church in Lower Burrell. In addition to his mother, Lonnie is survived by his sister and brother in law, Kimberly and Tim Frantz of South Buffalo Twp., brother and sister in law, Allen and Michelle Motosicky of New Ken and his sister, Kayla Motosicky-Graber of Washington IA. Lonnie is also survived by his 7 nieces & nephews, Robbie (Cheryl) Motosicky, Tony (Stacie) Motosicky, Denny Weaver, Larry Yanausch, Cheryl Duffy, Meagan Scalise-Briggs, Caleb Frantz, and Clint Motosicky. 9 great neices and nephews, Mikey Donahue, Mason Briggs, Zachary, Jacob & Corey Motosicky; James, Sarah, Keley Duffy & Lisa Noble He is preceded in death by his brother, John P "Ricky" Motosicky. James J. Leskovic, 62, of Buffalo Twp. passed away peacefully at his home on Thursday, July 16th, 2015. Jim was surrounded by his loving family after a long courageous 7 year battle with cancer. Jim was born in New Kensington on February 9, 1953. He was the son of late Rose (Gladowski) and Thomas Leskovic of Springdale. Jim was a 1971 graduate of Springdale High School. After high school he attended Indiana University of PA and then received his tool & die papers from Oberg Industries. He was employed as a quality control inspector at Ultra Precision Inc. in Sarver for 37 years. He was a member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Sarver. Jim loved hunting, fishing and spending weekends at the family camp in Forest Co. with his father, brothers, sons and friends. Jim always enjoyed watching the Pens, Steelers and Pirates. He also enjoyed putting up Christmas lights. In addition to his father, he is survived by his loving wife of 37 years, Diane (Lasish) Leskovic; their 3 sons and daughter in laws, BJ and Bettina of Buffalo Twp., Sean and Megan of Baden, PA and Jason and Kayla of Cambridge Springs, PA; his 4 brothers, Tom (Carrie) Leskovic of Cheswick, Tim Leskovic of Heidelberg, John (Debbie) Leskovic of Cheswick, Joe (Amy) Leskovic of Rural Valley and his Aunt Henrietta Eaton of Springdale. He is also survived by 4 of the greatest joys in his life, his grandchildren; Kenzie Grace, Mason James, Cole Thomas and Gavin Joseph. Martha J. "Jane" Striker, 84, of Chicora, passed away Wednesday, July 29, 2015, while in the company of family members, at Butler Memorial Hospital. Jane was born May 11, 1931, in Natrona Heights, a daughter of the late Marie (Beebe) and Harry U. McLaughlin. She was a member of the Zion Church of Karns City. Jane had a big and generous heart, who always put her family first. She would offer you the shirt off of her back and then ask if you needed her shoes too. Jane always worked alongside her husband in all their endeavors, which included years of antique flea marketing at Hazen and was supportive in everything they did. She enjoyed plastic needlework and crafting, reading and working on puzzle books. She was an avid baker and cook. She especially loved making her homemade buns. She is survived by her husband of 66 years, Richard A. Striker; her son, Richard L. "Rick" (Christine) Striker, of Natrona Heights; her daughter, Kathy (Stephen) Palla, of Chicora; three grandchildren, Hallie (Jason) Lindal, Jason R. (Nicole) Striker and Jessica Striker; four great-grandchildren, Janie (who was named after her great-grandmother) and Rori Lindal, Caden Kelley and Julia Striker. She was preceded in death by brothers, Robert and Edgar McLaughlin; and sisters, Bernice Kelly, Joy Laube and Florence Johnston. Richard K. "Dick" Sweeney, 92, of Kittanning, passed away on Sunday August 2nd, peacefully, at his residence. Dick was born in Freeport, on July 15, 1923, a son of the late Margaret (Kennedy) and Andrew Sweeney. He was a member of Jefferson Center Presbyterian Church in Saxonburg. Dick served with the U.S. Marines during WWII. He was awarded the Purple Heart medal for his service to his country. He was a truck driver at Freeport Transport for a number of years. He later worked at the Freeport Brick Company until retirement. Dick was a life member of the Saxonburg Volunteer Fire Dept. He also volunteered his time helping at the Syria Shriners in Cheswick, selling raffle tickets for various fund raisers. Dick enjoyed hunting, traveling, camping, playing horseshoes, and bike riding. He is survived by his wife of 68 years Louise (Shannon) Sweeney; his 4 daughters, Diane (John) Shirley, of S. Buffalo Twp., Kathy (Bob) Chambers, of Canton, GA. Chris was born in Natrona Heights, on November 24, 1972. He was the son of Maureen (McKenna) Stivers, of Sarver and the late Charles Stivers who passed in 1987. Chris was a 1992 graduate of Freeport Area High School. He had worked as a truck driver for Marks Trucking in Sarver, for over 10 years. Chris was a past member of the Buffalo Twp. Vol.. Fire Dept., Station #27. He enjoyed watching NASCAR, hunting and spending time with his family. In addition to his mother, he is survived by his wife, Joyce A. (McDade) Stivers. 3 daughters, Ashley (Samuel) Sipe, of Apollo, Catherine Zier, of Brackenridge, Mercedes Sowinski, of Beaver Falls and their son, Charles D. "Bear" McKenna-Stivers, of Cabot. Tom was born in Freeport, PA on June 18, 1937. He was the son of the late Della (Booher) and Roland O. Cornman Tom enlisted in the US Army and served for 2 years. Tom was honorably discharged from the Army and went to work for Freeport Brick Co. for a number of years. He then went to work for various coal mines in the area and finally retiring from Holbein Inc. in Sarver. He was a member of St. Mary, Mother of God Church in Freeport. Tom was an avid hunter, fisherman and vegetable gardener. He enjoyed watching all the Pittsburgh sports teams. He loved spending time with his family and especially his grandchildren. Edward M. Rusak, 50, of Sarver, passed away on Monday, August 17, while in the company of family members, at UPMC Presbyterian in Pittsburgh. Ed was born in New Kensington on May 17, 1965, the son of loving parents Virginia L. (Mallough) and Edward T. Rusak, who survive him of New Kensington. Ed was a 1983 graduate of Valley High School, earned his nursing degree from CCAC, and worked for 13 years as an RN in the emergency room at UPMC Children’s Hospital. He was a member of St. Joseph Roman Catholic Church in Cabot. Ed was an avid outdoorsman who enjoyed hunting, fishing, camping, and telling jokes and stories around a camp fire. His greatest love was his family. Ed lived for his children and loved being involved with everything they did. He cherished the memories he made with Aly & Nick each summer at Clear Creek, on fishing and hunting trips, on trips to the beach, and while watching numerous dance recitals, soccer matches, and hockey games. Ed's family wishes to thank all who supported Ed since his accident in 2002. In addition to his parents, he is survived by his loving wife of 21 years, Dawn A. (McGowen) Rusak, and his daughter, Alyson Rusak, and son, Nicholas Rusak, both of Buffalo Twp. Ed is also survived by his three brothers: Daniel (Alexis) Rusak, of Daytona Beach, FL; Eric (Stacy) Rusak, of Raleigh, NC; and Michael (Melissa) Rusak, of Raleigh, NC. He is also survived by his mother in law, Sidney Knapp, of Meadville and brother in law, Doug (Candace) McGowen, of Bartlett, TN, and his puppies Bella and Bentley. Obituary for Larry K. "Sarge" Smith
Larry Keith "Sarge" Smith, 82 of Freeport passed away on September 3rd 2015 at Good Samaritan Hospice in Cabot, PA after battling Lou Gherrig's Disease (ALS) for over a year. Larry was born in Natrona Heights on Nov. 11, 1932. He was the son of the late Clarence and Mathilda (Hughan) Smith. Sarge graduated from Har-Brac High School in 1950. He served his country for four years in the US Air Force during the Korean Conflict as an Airman 1st Class. After the War, Larry came home and became a co-owner in the Montgomery Lumber Co. in Freeport. Sarge had also been carpenter by trade. He was an avid volunteer with the Freeport Area Foodbank, Freeport Meals on Wheels and served on a litany of committees at Freeport United Methodist Church where he was a member. He enjoyed woodworking, yard work/gardening and attending his grandchildren's activities. Sarge was a member of the Armstrong Lodge No 239 F & AM in Freeport and the Freeport VFW Post 6648. Larry is survived by his wife of 57 years, Betty A. (Montgomery) Smith; his son Jeffrey & Donna Smith and daughter Susan & William Affrica both of South Buffalo Twp. Obituary for Betty Jane Lindsay
Betty Jane Gahagen Lindsay, 94, of South Buffalo Township, joined her family and friends in the spiritual world Friday morning, Sept. 18, while at Concordia Lutheran Ministries, Cabot. Her greatest joy was being a supportive wife and mother and spending time with the loved ones who now celebrate her life. She was the Lord’s faithful servant. Born June 17, 1921, in Reynoldsville, Pa., Betty was the daughter of the late Rev. Clair B. "Cal" and Florence (Dible) Gahagen. She married the late Alexander Heilman Lindsay, Sr. on Aug. 8, 1942, in Pittsburgh. She lived in several states before graduating from Pennsylvania College for Women (now Chatham College) and attending Yale School of Nursing. She was an excellent student, was on the PCW rifle team and played lawn hockey. Betty was an accomplished musician who learned to play the piano at a young age and studied the harp and oboe in her teen years. During high school and college, she played in the orchestra at Carnegie Tech (now Carnegie Mellon University) and sang in her church’s choir. While her children were young, she took organ lessons and taught music in the Pittsburgh New Church School. After her 60th birthday, she learned to play the guitar, autoharp, and dulcimer. Betty is well remembered for playing the harp at Christmas and for special events throughout her life. At the Sower’s Chapel in Winfield Township, where she was a member, she served on the pastor’s council and was an inspiring organist and choir director for more than 20 years. Betty cherished her times sharing worship and music with neighbors for community services. She taught Sunday and Bible schools for decades and was involved with release-time religious education in local schools. Betty ministered with her very life. Despite being raised a city girl, she became a farm wife. A generous and welcoming hostess, she invited countless people to share meals around her large kitchen table or at picnic tables outdoors. She enjoyed baking for any occasion. Although she was never without a book to read and many children will recall her reading to them, Betty was usually in motion, much like her hummingbird friends. She was a flower and vegetable gardener, and a bee keeper. She liked swimming, horseback riding and traveling to Florida, many states and Europe. She learned to fly and soloed in a Piper Cub. Betty was a constant correspondent with family, far away friends, and loved ones who were ill. She enthusiastically enjoyed her family's venture of Birdsfoot Golf Club. She was a member of the Tarentum Book Club, a lifelong member of the Freeport College Club and a past Worthy Matron of the Order of the Eastern Star in Freeport. During the past few years, Betty was fond of her many caregivers and her family is grateful for their kindness. She is survived by her eight children, Carol Ann (William) Kronen, of South Buffalo Township, Alexander H. (Trish) Lindsay Jr., of Buffalo Township, John S. (Erica) Lindsay, of South Buffalo Township, Charles G. (the late Claudia) Lindsay, of Winfield Township, James P. Pat was born in Freeport on April 9, 1939. She was the daughter of the late Helen V. (Bier) and Ambrose C. Gallagher. Pat grew up in Freeport and attended St. Mary Mother of God Church as well as St. Mary's Elementary. She also attended of St. Gertrude Roman Catholic Church in Vandergrift. Pat worked as a filing clerk at Robert Pierce and Associates in Pittsburgh for several years. She enjoyed crafts, traveling, playing solitaire on her computer and spending time with her family. She is survived by her husband of 57 years David B. Pflugh; 2 Daughters Nicki (Ken) Sayward, of Vernon Hill, IL, and Shelley (Ralph) Toland, of Erie; 3 Sons Jeff (Lisa) Pflugh, of Natrona Heights. Charles (Cheryl) Pflugh, of Indiana, PA, and Terry (Peggy) Pflugh, of Glenn Mills, PA; 13 grandchildren; 2 great-grandchildren; brother Ronald (Linda) Gallagher, of Freeport; sister Carol (Frank) Evans, of Farnham, VA. Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by 2 grandchildren Patrick Gore and R.J. Toland III. Family and friends will be received on Friday October 2nd, from 2-4 & 7-9 p.m. in the Redmond Funeral Home Inc. 524 High St. Freeport. A parting prayer service will be held in the funeral home at 9:30 a.m. followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at St. Mary, Mother of God Church in Freeport at St. Mary, Mother of God Church, Freeport, at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, October 3rd, with Father Ronald Maquinana officiating. Miles "Mike" Beale, 93, of South Buffalo Twp. passed away on Saturday, October 10th, peacefully, at Elmcroft Of Saxonburg. Mike was born on his family's farm in South Buffalo Twp on September 16, 1922. He was the son of the late Agnes (McCallister) and James G. Beale. Mike was the widower of Patricia G. (Kelly) Beale who passed in 2006. He served in the U.S. Navy during WW II. After the war he came home and went to work as a general foreman for PPG Industries in Creighton. Mike had worked at PPG for 44 years, retiring in 1984. He was a member of Freeport United Methodist Church and a member of Armstrong Lodge #239 F&AM in Freeport. Mike enjoyed golfing, hunting, farming, gardening and doing yard work. He is survived by his son and daughter in law, Miles Gibson "Gib" & Linda Beale of Atlanta, GA. His daughter in law, Barbara Beale, of South Buffalo Twp. Mike is also survived by his 3 grand and 7 great grandchildren. He is preceded in death by his 2 sons, Edward A. & Ronald A. Beale. 3 brothers, Richard, Howard & Roy Beale and his sister, Mamie Beale. Kayla Ann Swartz, 23, of Freeport died unexpectedly on Saturday, October 10th, 2015. God received a new angel when Kayla passed away in her sleep at her home. Kayla was born in on February 23, 1992. She was the daughter of Margie (Wolfarth) and James E. Swartz, Jr. with whom she lived. Kayla was a 2010 graduate of Freeport Area High School. During her school years, Kayla was involved in dance, chorus, and gymnastics. She also graduated from the Newport Business School in 2012. She enjoyed drawing, doing Mehndi Design art and craft work. She volunteered with the Freeport Library, Restore Freeport Park and the Freeport International Baseball Invitational. Kayla loved her 3 nieces very much and never missed any of their activities. She was a very thoughtful person who always worried about everyone but herself. She was a member of Freeport United Methodist Church Freeport, PA 16229. In addition to her parents she is survived by her Aunt, Vicki and Uncle Ed Selker of Buffalo Twp. Her grandfather, Harvey Meckley of Sarver and her Grandmother, Georgeanne Swartz of Chicora. She is also survived by her three loving nieces, Jenna, Sydney & Reese Selker. and many aunts, uncles and cousins. She is preceded in death by her birth mother, Jennifer Sue Meckley who passed in 1992. Grandparents, Howard and Grace Wolfarth, Paul and Zelda Meckley, James E. Dolores R Hamashin passed October 30, 2015 in Carlsbad, CA after a long illness. She was a longtime resident in Sarver, PA until 1987 when she relocated to southern California. Dolores was born in Pittsburgh on July 1, 1929 and she was the daughter of the late Helen and Cornelius Garrigan. Dolores is the widow of Lloyd Hamashin, Sr. who passed in 1984 in Natrona Heights, PA. She is survived by her children, Lloyd & Cindi Hamashin, Jr., Maureen Colvin, Joseph Hamashin, Cynthia & Scott Fadick and Vincent & Christa Hamashin. She is also survived by her 6 grandchildren and her 3 sisters, Helen Fassinger, Patricia Garrigan and Vicki Fanta. Obituary for Joseph William Motosicky
Joseph William Motosicky, 66, of Allegheny Twp., passed away unexpectedly on Friday, October 30th, 2015 at West Penn Hospital in Pittsburgh. Joe was born in Natrona Heights on April 26, 1949. He was the son of the late Betty Mae (Becker) and Joseph Motosicky. Joe was an avid "car guy" who enjoyed going to car shows and drag races. Joe still has his 1966 convertible Corvette, which is the car he was in when he met his wife. He also enjoyed boating, camping and spending time with his friends and family. Joe served in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War. After his service to his country he went work for A.T.I. Steel in Brackenridge. Joe worked for many years in the 8-3 meltshop maintaining on the furnaces, he then finished as a high lift operator after 33 years of servce, retiring in 2006. Joe is survived by his wife of 42 years, Pamela Sue (Davidson) Motosicky. Their son and daughter in law, Mike & Kristine Motosicky and their grandson, Gavin Joseph Motosicky all of New Kensington. His 2 brothers, Tom Motosicky, of Natrona Heights and Matthew (Kim) Motosicky, of Slate Lick. His 2 sisters, Theresa (Russ) Poe, of Buffalo Twp. and Linda (Stan) Stull, of Freeport. Maribel F. Griffith, 82, of Freeport, passed away on Monday, November 16th, while in the company of family members, at Armstrong County Health Center in Kittanning. Maribel was born in Natrona Heights, on February 14, 1933. She was the daughter of the late Delphine (Stivason) and George A Tantlinger. She worked as a book keeper at West Penn Hospital for 15 years. Maribel enjoyed crafts, woodworking, painting, reading and Facebooking. She always looked forward to her bus trips to Atlantic City with her high school girlfriends. She is survived by her son Gary Griffith, of Tacoma, WA, daughter Susan (Fred) Elkin, of North Buffalo Twp., daughter Amy Harpool, of New Kensington; and son Patrick Griffith, of Tacoma, WA. She is also survived by her 7 grandchildren, and 5 great grandchildren with one on the way. Howard Lynn Smock, Sr., 89, of South Buffalo Twp., passed away on Tuesday, December 1st, peacefully, at his home. Lynn was born on his family's farm in South Buffalo Twp. on January 3, 1926. He was the son of the late Mary (Garver) and Joseph Smock. Lynn served in the U.S. Army during WW II. He was stationed in the Pacific Theater. After his service to his country he went to work as a supervisor at Moonlight Mushroom for over 30 years, retired in 1978. After he retired from the mushroom mine, he work for a number of years at Deveraux Chevrolet in Freeport. He was a lifetime member of Freeport United Methodist Church. Lynn enjoyed hunting, feeding the animals around his home, caring for his gold fish pond and flower gardening. He is survived by is wife of 68 years, Luella (Sims) Smock. Their 2 sons; H. Lynn (Mary) Smock, Jr., of Buffalo Twp. and Gerald A. (Cheryl) Smock, of Winfield Twp. He is also survived by his grandchildren; Tracy Smock & Greg King, Jennifer (Travis) Pearce, Nathan (Chloe) Smock, Heather (Tim) Buck, Jason (Melissa) Smock and Michael (Becky) Smock. Lynn is also survived by his 11 great grandchildren and 1 great great granddaughter. He was preceded in death by his son Larry J. Donna Jean Bucholz, 72, of Buffalo Twp., passed away on Saturday, December 5th, while in the company of family members, at Concordia Lutheran Ministries in Cabot. Donna was born in Freeport on January 9, 1943. She was the only child of the late Dorothy S. (Wegner) and Frank G. Check. Donna was the widow of Anthony S. Bucholz who passed in January of this year. She owned and operated "Tomorrows Treasures" a cross stitch and craft store in Natrona Heights. She had also worked for a number of years at "Fisher's Big Wheel" store. Donna enjoyed doing craft work, scrap booking and she was also very involved with documenting her family's genealogy. She and her husband, Tony loved to go out for dinner and spend as much time as they could at their grandchildren's activities. She is survived by her 2 daughters, Cheryl (James) Farrell, of Mission Viejo, CA and Laura (James) Stewart, of Buffalo Twp. She is also survived by 3 grandchildren, Kayla Farrell and Lurena & Addison Stewart.
